Over 2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, and more than 3.6 billion lack proper sanitation. Clean water and sanitation are fundamental to human health, dignity, and sustainable development. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Access to clean water is essential for preventing diseases, ensuring food security, and supporting economic growth. Yet, pollution, climate change, and poor infrastructure continue to threaten global water security.

Why SDG 6 Matters

Water is a vital resource that affects every aspect of life. Ensuring clean water and sanitation means:

  • Preventing waterborne diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid.

  • Enhancing food security by improving irrigation and sustainable farming.

  • Supporting economic growth by providing water access for industries and businesses.

  • Protecting ecosystems by reducing water pollution and conserving freshwater sources.

  • Ensuring gender equality by reducing the burden on women and girls who often collect water in developing regions.

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation Targets

SDG 6 is structured around specific targets aimed at achieving universal access to clean water and sanitation:

  • Target 6.1: Achieve Universal and Equitable Access to Safe Drinking Water – Ensure everyone has access to affordable, clean drinking water.

  • Target 6.2: Achieve Access to Adequate and Equitable Sanitation and Hygiene – End open defecation and ensure proper sanitation for all.

  • Target 6.3: Improve Water Quality by Reducing Pollution – Reduce untreated wastewater and increase water recycling.

  • Target 6.4: Increase Water-Use Efficiency Across All Sectors – Promote sustainable water management in agriculture, industry, and households.

  • Target 6.5: Implement Integrated Water Resources Management – Improve water governance and cooperation among countries sharing water resources.

  • Target 6.6: Protect and Restore Water-Related Ecosystems – Conserve lakes, rivers, and wetlands to maintain biodiversity.

  • Target 6.a: Expand International Cooperation and Capacity Building – Support developing countries with technology and resources for clean water solutions.

  • Target 6.b: Support Community Participation in Water and Sanitation Management – Encourage local engagement in sustainable water management.

The Role of Social Entrepreneurs in Advancing Clean Water and Sanitation

Social entrepreneurs play a critical role in addressing water and sanitation challenges through innovation and sustainable solutions. Their contributions include:

  1. Developing Affordable Water Purification Solutions – Creating cost-effective water filtration systems for underserved communities.

  2. Improving Sanitation Infrastructure – Building sustainable toilets and hygiene facilities in remote areas.

  3. Enhancing Water Conservation Practices – Promoting rainwater harvesting and water-efficient farming techniques.

  4. Leveraging Technology for Water Management – Using AI, IoT, and blockchain to improve water distribution and monitoring.

  5. Advocating for Policy Change – Raising awareness and influencing policies to improve water governance and sanitation access.

Examples of Social Enterprises Advancing Clean Water and Sanitation

1. Water.org – Microfinance for Clean Water Access

Founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org provides small loans to low-income households to build water and sanitation facilities.

2. Drinkwell – Safe Water Kiosks

Drinkwell uses a filtration system to provide affordable, arsenic-free drinking water in South Asia through a network of water kiosks.

3. Sanergy – Sustainable Sanitation Solutions

Sanergy develops low-cost, high-quality sanitation systems in urban slums and repurposes waste into useful byproducts.

4. Warka Water – Harvesting Water from Air

This social enterprise designs structures that collect potable water from the air, benefiting communities in arid regions.

5. Charity: Water – Funding Clean Water Projects

A venture that partners with local organizations to implement sustainable water and sanitation projects worldwide.

Conclusion: A Future with Clean Water for All

Clean water and sanitation are fundamental human rights that impact health, education, and economic prosperity. SDG 6 provides a roadmap for ensuring safe water access for all, but achieving it requires collective action.

Social entrepreneurs are leading the way with innovative, scalable solutions. By supporting and investing in these initiatives, we can accelerate progress toward a world where everyone has access to clean, safe water and dignified sanitation.
