Summary
You can’t save the Amazon with an app. But . . .
Huge tracts of forest were being slashed and burned to make way for livestock, farmland, and timber for our ever-hungry world markets. But due to the massive size of the rainforest, and its relative inaccessibility, by the time authorities became aware of illegal activity in the region, it was too late to do anything but note the losses.
So Adalberto and Carlos built on NASA’s satellite technology, creating an app that made it possible to know, almost in real time, where deforestation occurs.
Armed with this data, national authorities made this available to the public: prosecutors attacked, news agencies shamed, and major retailers sanctioned bad actors… driving down illegal behavior and saving the Amazon with an app.
So, you can.
