What is "Bad Capitalism"?

Capitalism isn't good. And it's not bad. Capitalism is powerful. And with much power comes much responsibility. However, if it is organized at the expense of people and planet, capitalism can be a dangerously corrupt and morally corrosive system.

1. Bad Capitalism Idolizes the "Profit Motive"

‘The Profit Motive’ is the centerpiece of traditional Capitalism. But over the decades, the Profit Motive has mutated into "Profit at All Costs," which has come at a very high cost. Profit has become an idol, and much has been sacrificed at its altar. This single-minded pursuit of profit often disregards ethical considerations, leading to decisions that prioritize financial gain over the well-being of people and the planet.

2. Bad Capitalism Exploits People and Planet

The Profit Motive, unhindered by any moral compass or legislative oversight, incentivizes bad behavior. Predatory practices designed to maximize profit without consequence have led to some of the world's most troubling trends, including abusive labor practices, environmental disasters, destructive consumption, exploitation of energy sources, population displacement, decimation of traditional cultures, corruption of governments, and the fracturing of societies. "Bad Capitalism" turns its profit-seeking artillery against people and the planet, ultimately turning Capitalism against Humanity.

3. Bad Capitalism Creates a Vicious Cycle

Bad capitalism is based on business models that thrive to the extent that patrons are hurt. The Profit Motive incentivizes some industries to perpetuate problems rather than present solutions because more profit is made as long as the problem continues. This creates a vicious cycle where societal issues are exacerbated, not resolved, leading to long-term harm and instability.

4. Bad Capitalism Warps Human Behavior

Bad Capitalism perpetuates a flawed behavioral model. The "homo economicus" or economic man is perfectly selfish, perfectly rational, and relentlessly self-maximizing. This model encourages success through self-indulgence and an insatiable quest for more, promoting values that undermine communal well-being and ethical behavior.

5. Bad Capitalism Drives a Consumption Economy

Consumerism is rooted in shame. Despite having more possessions and material wealth than ever before, people are more unhappy, depressed, and anxious. The endless quest for success or excess will never satisfy our deeper call to significance. This consumption-driven economy prioritizes material wealth over mental and emotional well-being, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and mental health issues.

6. Bad Capitalism Works for the Few

In the neoliberal era, economics works only for big corporations and billionaires. It drives money out of the pockets of the majority and exclusively into the pockets of the top few. This concentration of wealth exacerbates inequality and social unrest, creating a society where the majority struggle while a select few thrive.

7. Bad Capitalism Enriches Its Shareholders

Bad Capitalism is primarily concerned with enriching its shareholders. This focus often leads to cost-cutting measures that harm employees, reduce product quality, and damage the environment. The relentless pursuit of shareholder value undermines broader societal interests and long-term sustainability.

8. Bad Capitalism Preys on People for Profit

Bad Capitalism preys on people's vulnerabilities to maximize profit. It exploits consumer insecurities, promotes unhealthy lifestyles, and manipulates desires through aggressive marketing. This predatory approach often leads to harmful consumption patterns and exacerbates social and health issues.

9. Bad Capitalism Drives Bad Policies

"Bad Capitalism" uses the resources it generates to influence public policy in ways that serve its own narrow interests. This often results in dangerous deregulation, tax cuts for the wealthy, and policies that undermine public goods and services. The alignment of corporate and political power creates an environment where public policies favor the wealthy and powerful at the expense of the broader population.

10. Bad Capitalism Cannibalizes Democracy

Bad Capitalism cannibalizes democracy by concentrating power and wealth in the hands of a few, fracturing societies. It undermines democratic institutions and processes, leading to a loss of public trust and engagement. This erosion of democracy creates an environment where economic and political power are increasingly intertwined, jeopardizing the foundations of a fair and just society.

Bad Capitalism is ultimately unsustainable. But the antidote to "Bad Capitalism" isn't communism. It's "Good Capitalism."
